GLOBALFIT ‘DISRUPTS’ THE WAY WE GET FIT

PHILADELPHIA, PA — (November 21, 2008) — “Ninety–six percent of Americans know that they should exercise regularly,” a fitness industry executive told his peers at a forum in Shanghai, China recently. “Only about 20% of them actually do it.” To address that gap between thought and action, the executive — Frank Napolitano, the President and CEO of GlobalFit — proposed a “disruptive” new product to disrupt people right off of their couches.

What makes a product “disruptive”? “Disruptive innovations don’t bring better products to established customers,” he clarified to the audience at the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association’s (IHRSA) seventh–annual Asia–Pacific Forum, held in Shanghai, China. “They ‘disrupt’ and redefine the market by reaching new customers with products that are simpler and more convenient.” By way of example, he added, “Think of the iPod. Think of disposable cameras.”

A leading provider of healthy living benefits, GlobalFit recently unveiled its own ‘disruption’: Destination: You, a program that combines validated activity tracking with an educational, motivational website. Users — those who know they should exercise regularly, but don’t — can go to their personalized webpage to see how much activity they perform daily and then use the site’s tools and resources to steadily build more activity into their lives.

The site can report on this activity because the users wear a tiny activity tracker clipped to their shoe. Like a pedometer, the tracker counts steps. Unlike a pedometer, the tracker is sensitive enough to distinguish walking from running and other activities; calculates the distance travelled by each user; and wirelessly sends its accurate, time–coded data to the Destination: You website.

Users can then logon to see how much they’ve walked or run and when the activity happened. They can also get motivated to ever–greater activity by the site’s community boards, educational articles, and tips from the Destination: You tour guide, fitness icon Kathy Smith.

The IHRSA Asia–Pacific Forum offered four days of education, networking and keynote speakers, including Napolitano and other industry luminaries.
